Alocasia Black Velvet Pink Variegated: A Care Guide for Growing Indoors

Alocasia Black Velvet Pink Variegated sets soft pink, cream and white against an exceptionally dark, velvety surface. Its rounded, shield-like leaves deepen towards near-black, with bright silver veins drawing a clear framework across the foliage. The contrast is rich and striking even on a small plant.

Black Velvet is associated with Alocasia reginula, one of the compact jewel Alocasias. Thick leaves rise from a short central base into a close, upright arrangement, bringing both texture and structure to a carefully lit shelf or display.

Pink and pale cream variegation adds another layer to its distinctive finish. Irregular splashes and larger sectors interrupt the dark velvet, creating a combination of softness, colour and sharp silver lines. It is a particularly captivating plant for collectors who enjoy the fine detail of foliage.

Plant Care Guide:

Light: Provide bright, filtered light to support the patterned foliage. Shelter from harsh direct sun and introduce changes in grow-light intensity gradually.

Water: Allow the surface and uppermost substrate to dry slightly before watering thoroughly. Let excess water drain away while retaining light moisture below. Keep a small root ball evenly supplied with moisture rather than saturated.

Humidity: Aim for around 60–80% with gentle ventilation. Humid air and a leaf surface that dries freely provide a useful balance for its velvety foliage.

Temperature: Enjoys steady warmth around 18°C to 27°C. Keep above 15°C, particularly while the substrate is moist.

Plant Tips:

  1. An east-facing window or filtered brighter position suits Black Velvet Pink. Full-spectrum LEDs work well for shelves and cabinets when positioned to provide even light without heating the leaves.
  2. We recommend an open mix of coco coir, perlite and fine orchid bark. Good aeration throughout the substrate, together with drainage holes, helps keep the roots healthy.
  3. Keep the pot proportionate to the compact root system. Check light, warmth and moisture together when assessing growth, and repot once the roots need more room.
  4. Feed lightly with a complete houseplant fertiliser during active growth, following the dilution instructions. A modest, regular nutrient supply suits its compact growth.
  5. Handle the leaves gently and let their natural velvet finish take centre stage. Avoid leaf-shine products and leave space for fresh foliage to expand without rubbing against neighbouring plants.
  6. If a pale section browns, retain the healthy green tissue and review filtered light, moisture, humidity and fertiliser use. Focus on consistent conditions as the next leaf develops.
  7. Look for established offsets around the base when repotting. Well-rooted offsets can be separated during active growth and settled into their own small pots.
  8. Keep out of reach of pets and small children. Alocasia contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals; wash your hands after handling damaged leaves.
