Anthurium Red Crystallinum x Dorayaki: A Care Guide for Growing Indoors

Anthurium Red Crystallinum x Dorayaki brings warm emerging colour to broad, rounded velvet leaves. Prominent pale veins spread across the darker surface, creating the crystalline pattern that makes this foliage so distinctive. Its appeal lies in the combination of a full leaf shape, soft texture and sharply drawn detail.

New growth opens in a palette of red, bronze or copper before deepening towards green. As the blade expands and hardens, the focus shifts from its warm colour to the luminous vein pattern against the mature foliage. Each stage offers something different to appreciate.

This cultivated cross brings together the red-emergent character associated with Red Crystallinum and the rounded foliage associated with Dorayaki. The resulting display has depth and movement: fresh leaves unfold above established velvet foliage, building a layered collection of colour and form.

Plant Care Guide:

Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Give the velvet foliage a well-lit position and filter hot direct sun, introducing any increase in light gradually.

Water: Maintain light moisture in an airy mix, allowing the surface to begin drying before watering thoroughly. Drain completely and check small nursery pots near the surface so moisture remains available to the roots.

Humidity: Aim for around 60–80% with gentle ventilation. Steady humidity supports expanding leaves, while gentle air movement helps the foliage dry after any wetting.

Temperature: Enjoys temperatures around 18°C to 27°C. Keep the roots warm, maintain temperatures above 15°C and shelter from cold draughts.

Plant Tips:

  1. An east-facing window or a filtered brighter window suits this velvet-leaved Anthurium. Full-spectrum LEDs provide useful support where natural light is limited.
  2. We recommend orchid bark, perlite and coco coir in an airy mix, with particle sizes suited to the roots. Loosely incorporated sphagnum can help retain moisture while keeping the structure open.
  3. Choose a pot proportionate to the root system and keep the growing point clear of persistently wet material. Move up a modest size when the roots need additional space.
  4. Feed established plants with a complete houseplant fertiliser during active growth, following its dilution instructions. Reduce feeding when growth slows or after substantial root disturbance.
  5. Allow new leaves to unfold naturally and give them room to expand. Watching their colour and vein pattern develop through hardening is one of the rewards of this hybrid.
  6. Keep healthy mature green leaves alongside the warm-toned new growth. They support the plant’s energy needs and create the dark backdrop that makes emerging foliage stand out.
  7. Propagate an established plant by dividing sections that each have a growing point and healthy roots. Time division for active growth and settle the new plants into warm, humid conditions.
  8. Include leaf undersides in routine pest checks. Keep out of reach of pets and small children, as Anthurium contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals.
