Monstera deliciosa 'Bulbasaur': A Care Guide for Growing Indoors

Monstera deliciosa Bulbasaur wears a camouflage-like mosaic of forest green, mint and cream. Fine flecks, soft marbling and broader patches overlap across the leaf, giving the variegation a layered quality. Rounded, heart-shaped juvenile foliage makes the intricate pattern especially easy to appreciate.
As Bulbasaur establishes and climbs, larger leaves develop the splits and openings associated with mature Monstera deliciosa. The progression from a compact young plant to a substantial climber brings a new scale to its patterned foliage.
Its appeal is in the rich mixture of greens as much as the pale markings. Mossy tones and cool mint soften the contrast with cream, creating a distinctive display that becomes more architectural as the plant matures. Bulbasaur is a particularly engaging Monstera to follow from its first leaves into a larger indoor specimen.
Plant Care Guide:
Light: Provide bright, indirect light to support strong growth. Filter harsh afternoon sun to protect the paler sections, and give the plant an evenly lit position as it climbs.
Water: Allow the upper portion of the mix to dry and the pot to become noticeably lighter before watering thoroughly. Check deeper moisture as well as the surface, then let excess water drain completely.
Humidity: Aim for around 50–70% with gentle air circulation. Acclimatised plants grow well in ordinary household conditions; improve particularly dry air gradually.
Temperature: Enjoys temperatures around 18°C to 28°C. Protect from cold draughts and keep clear of winter window glass and direct radiator heat.
Plant Tips:
- Use a bright, filtered window or supplement with a full-spectrum grow light. Introduce stronger light gradually after a move to help the foliage adjust.
- We recommend a freely draining mix of coco coir, orchid bark and perlite or pumice. Use finer bark for starter plants and a more open structure as the root system becomes substantial.
- Provide a pole or other upright support as the stem begins to climb. Secure the stem gently, leaving the individual leaf stalks free to orient towards the light.
- Support, good light and steady growth help the plant progress towards larger, more divided foliage. Enjoy the rounded juvenile leaves as the first stage of that development.
- Feed during active growth with a complete houseplant fertiliser at the product’s recommended dilution. Reduce the frequency when growth slows, particularly through darker UK months.
- Use the pot’s drying rate to guide watering. Checking below the surface is especially useful with larger containers, where the centre retains moisture longer.
- Repot when the roots have substantially filled their container, moving up a modest size. Adding a support at the same time makes it easier to position without disturbing established roots later.
- Keep out of reach of pets and small children. Monstera deliciosa contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals.
