Plant type: Live variegated foliage houseplant with slender pink, cream and green leaves.
Growing location: A warm indoor position in bright, indirect light; protect from frost and cold draughts.
Alocasia Bambino Pink Variegated is a beautiful and highly desirable aroid houseplant, admired for its slender, arrow-shaped foliage and remarkable pink variegation. Its elongated leaves rise elegantly from narrow petioles, displaying prominent pale veins against a patchwork background of soft pink, creamy white and green. This marbling contrasts across the leaf surface, with each new leaf developing its own unique arrangement of colour.
Bambino belongs to the cultivated Alocasia 'Amazonica' group, a lineage originating from a hybrid between Alocasia sanderiana and Alocasia longiloba 'Watsoniana'. The original hybrid is generally attributed to Salvadore Mauro, who developed it at Amazon Nursery in Miami during the 1950s.
Plant Care Guide:
Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Its pink and cream variegated foliage contains less chlorophyll than the fully green form, making sufficient light particularly important for healthy growth. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate variegated sections.
Water: Alocasia Bambino Pink prefers lightly moist soil but is sensitive to waterlogged roots. Allow the top 2–3 cm of substrate to dry slightly between waterings, then water thoroughly and let excess water drain away. Avoid allowing the substrate to dry out completely for extended periods. Reduce watering during winter when growth naturally slows.
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity, with an ideal target of 60–75% for optimal growth. Its delicate pink and cream variegated sections can be particularly susceptible to browning under dry conditions. Maintain consistent humidity with gentle air circulation to discourage fungal problems.
Temperature: Enjoys consistently warm conditions, ideally between 18°C and 27°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C, as prolonged exposure to cold can slow growth and encourage dormancy or leaf loss. Keep away from cold draughts, radiators and sudden temperature fluctuations.
