Alocasia Cuprea Super Pink Variegated #05

The Alocasia Cuprea Pink Variegated is a true jewel aroid.

Its iridescent, metallic shield-shaped leaves and deeply impressed veins divide the sculpted leaves into raised metallic panels, while the glossy surface shifts through pink, cream, copper, bronze and deep green as the viewing angle changes. Turn the leaf and a rich reddish-purple reverse completes the warm, mineral palette.

Then comes the pink. Rose, deep, blush and pale albo sectors move through the same iridescent tissue, so the variegation does not look flat or painted on, it glows with the leaf's natural metallic sheen. Every specimen is its own piece of art.

Background of Cuprea

Alocasia cuprea is an accepted species native to the wet tropical forests of Sabah in Borneo. It entered botanical literature during the great Victorian era of tropical plant collecting, first appearing as Caladium cupreum in 1854 before the accepted name Alocasia cuprea was published in 1861. One of its historic names was Alocasia metallica, a fitting record of the extraordinary leaf surface that has fascinated growers for more than 170 years.

The pink-variegated form adds an exceptionally difficult-to-find chimeric expression to a species that was already considered a jewel. It combines botanical history, sculptural structure and a colour effect that very few foliage plants can reproduce.

Care

Place it in bright, indirect light to support strong growth and visible pink expression while protecting the glossy foliage from harsh direct sun. Aim for steady warmth around 20–27°C, humidity above 60% and regular gentle airflow. Water when the upper compost is approaching dryness, then allow excess water to drain completely - free draining, loose mix is essential for this plant in order to mimic its natural habitat. Use an open, free-draining aroid mix and never leave the roots waterlogged.
