Plant type: Live variegated jewel Alocasia houseplant with textured mint-and-green leaves.
Growing location: A warm indoor position with bright, filtered light and gentle air movement.
Alocasia Dragon Scale Mint is a rare and stunning houseplant prized for its uniquely textured foliage and beautiful variegation. It name comes from the resemblance of its leaves to the scales of a dragon. It has thick, leathery foilage which shape into raised panels that sit between darker, recessed veins, giving each broad, shield-shaped blade a textured surface that resembles overlapping scales.
This mint variegated form displays a radiant range of radiant greens and cream patterning that cascade over the deeper green foundation of the leaf. The plant belongs to the cultivated forms of Alocasia baginda, a species associated with Borneo. Its compact, upright arrangement of foliage is characteristic of the smaller Alocasia often called jewel Alocasia's in cultivation. It’s perfect plant for enthusiasts looking to add a bold and exotic statement to their collection.
Plant Care Guide:
Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sun to prevent leaf damage.
Water: Alocasia Dragon Scale Mint prefers evenly moist soil but does not tolerate standing water. The top layer of soil should dry slightly between waterings, while the root zone remains lightly moist. Reduce watering slightly in winter.
Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity but adapts well to normal household levels. Aim for the range of 60-80% for optimal growth.
Temperature: Enjoys warm temperatures and should be kept away from cold drafts. The ideal range for optimal growth is 18°C to 27°C - try to avoid temperatures below 15°C as this may stunt growth.
Plant Tips:
Using Full spectrum LEDs or placing in a south or west facing window would give ideal light for this plant, given that it’s not in directly lit by the sun.
Provide bright, filtered light and shelter from hot direct sun.
Use an airy, freely draining medium. Water when the surface begins to dry, then let excess water drain away. We reccomend a mix of coco coir, perlite and orchid bark and supplementing with house plant formulated fertiliser.
Keep conditions warm with good humidity and gentle ventilation; avoid cold draughts and persistently saturated roots - movement of air helps keep things under control.
